Having rebuilt my plugins folder from scratch a couple of times, I do appreciate the plight of the new/returning player wishing to "binge download" content so they can get back up and running, with minimal pain and with all the best stuff. The rest of it becomes highly subjective after that point, especially as most of the files out there aren't even really "mods", but are buildings. The only one that's universally agreed upon is the NAM-which, if it's been more than 3 years since you last got into the game, is in itself a 260MB package now that combines all the previous separate download transit mods. To add to what /u/phalanxs said, they're not just "kind of frowned upon", they're actually fully frowned upon, per the rules of the Subreddit (under "Videos and Modding Posting Guidelines"), as well as at Simtropolis (see #6) and SC4 Devotion (see #10).Īnother part of the problem is the matter of what is an "essential mod".
